The numbers are in. The Cowboys raised more than $185,000 over the weekend to help feed hungry children.
Taste of the NFL: The Ultimate Dallas Cowboys Tailgate Party was held Sunday night at the Glass Cactus at the Gaylord Texan. Proceeds from the event go to the children's programs of the North Texas Food Bank.
The Cowboys have hosted this event since 2004 and in that time have raised in the neighborhood of $700,000 for hunger relief. The numbers are staggering. According to recent USDA data, Texas leads the nation in food insecure children, with one in five living in households that don't have consistent access to nutrition. That ratio is closer to one in three in Dallas County.
"Raising money here is a great opportunity to give back to the community,'' said linebacker DeMarcus Ware, who along with teammate Marcus Spears hosted the event.
"It's been getting bigger every year and I think the support for it has grown,'' Spears said. "Obviously, it (event) brings celebrity from the Cowboys.
"Whatever reason people are here, as long as they spend a little money, we got done what we needed to accomplish.'' __________________
