Gil Brandt Says Taking Ezekiel Elliott Improves Our Defense
I get this. I really do. The fact of the matter is, the thing I am most unsatisfied with regarding McFadden and 2015 was that we were no longer dominating the time of possession and giving our Defense time to recuperate.
When you have a system like we do that relies on shifts and changes to personnel, the best way to keep them all gassed up and in pursuit is to keep them off the field a lot. A lot of people want more sacks. I do too, but I'd be every bit as happy with 3 and outs forced as I would with anything a Defense can do.
That's why Murray was our biggest loss last year in my not so humble opinion. We could not grind teams down. By adding a key piece like Elliott you undoubtedly help the Offense by adding a threat in the run game that was missing. You also help the Defense by keeping them fresher. I won't go so far as to say he helps the Defense as much as Ramsey or a pass rusher could, but it is not above the realm of possible that he does. The only way he couldn't have that kind of impact is if he scores for us on long runs so often that the Defense doesn't get a good rest. I doubt any of us would gripe about that because as we all know scores deflate the opponent more than anything else does.
