R-e-l-a-x. It may sound Aaron Rodgers like, but it’s exactly what Cowboys Nation should do right now. The Dallas Cowboys are 6-2 heading in to Week Nine with their bye week approaching in Week Eleven. There is every right to believe the Cowboys will be fine aftera snapping their six-game win streak.
Dallas arguably played one of their worst games of the season, and only lost by a field goal in overtime. Quarterback Tony Romo dodged an injury that could have been much worse, we hope, and Murray is continuing to be reliable while on his way to a record-breaking season still. Even backup quarterback Brandon Weeden managed the game effectively in Romo’s absence. Weeden led the Cowboys’ offense to ten points on two consecutive drives.
The point is, it’s not time to panic just yet. Every game nor outcome will be perfect, but you have to believe that the Cowboys toughest opponent so far has been themselves. Fumbles and play-calling especially. DeMarco Murray now sits at the top of the league with Jay Cutler for most fumbles lost this season so far. Against the Redskins on Monday Night, he did what everyone would want their workhorse running back to do, fight for extra yardage. However, it didn’t turn out in his favor. Had he not coughed up the ball on the Redskins 10-yard line, the Cowboys would have likely taken a commanding lead against the Redskins.
Murray had a very effective night on Monday Night Football, piling over two hundred yards with 141 of those yards coming off the ground. When you have the leading rusher in the NFL who is averaging over seven yards a carry throughout the game, why wouldn’t you continue to run him in the fourth quarter and overtime? Murray only rushed three times after the third quarter on Monday Night against the Redskins. Yes, just three times. You would think he was having trouble racking up yards, but that wasn’t the case. He was extremely effective throughout the game aside from the fumble.
When play-caller Scott Linehan was asked why he didn’t use Murray at the end of the game, he simply stated that he will probably be regretting his decisions. According to Linehan, one of their goals was to use play action on second down. “I’m probably going to wish I had run the ball on the second play” said Linehan.
Why the Cowboys went away from what had been working throughout their six-game win streak will be an ongoing question. But, these are all own mistakes that Dallas can easily fix.
The Dallas Cowboys are still on top of the NFC East and have one of the best records in the league. They have a favorable schedule the second half of the season, and they’ll learn from their mistakes and move on. Just like their fans should.
The Cowboys bandwagon may have gotten a little lighter after a messy loss to their division rival, but the rest of their season still looks promising. Bend but don’t break...
